What is Yaupon Tea?
Before discussing the big announcement, let’s start with the basics: What is Yaupon Tea and why is it so popular?
Yaupon Tea was discovered in the early/mid sixteenth century on the Texas coast from the plant Ilex vomitoria. As a cousin to Yerba Mate, it contains a much smoother and slightly sweeter flavor. It is found from a holly bush and is known for its many medicinal properties. It was widely consumed by Native Americans who brewed it for purification rituals. Later, this tea was traded in northern parts of the country like Illinois. It is free of tannins and will never turn bitter regardless of steeping time. Yaupon is considered a botanical blend but contains caffeine.

According to Healthline, Yaupon offers many health benefits as well as a boost of energy - perfect for a morning energy boost or a midday pick-me-up. It provides the caffeine you need without the anxiousness or jitters. It is jam-packed with antioxidants that reduce inflammation, cell damage, and risk of heart disease. It also boosts mood, mental energy, and concentration. Compared to green teas, it is more potent in polyphenol.

We are excited to be Ohio’s very first provider of Yaupon Tea sourced from Texas. We chose to partner with CatSpring Yaupon in Texas for a multitude of reasons. CatSpring Yaupon is Native American-owned Regenerative Organic Certified company. They also happen to be female-owned by Abianne Miller Falla. CatSpring Yaupon is dedicated to supplying sustainably wild-harvested tea that is responsibly processed and ethically sourced while also maintaining a strong commitment to others who are in need.
Similar to our commitment to hiring refugees, CatSpring Yaupon also shares a heart for others. As part of their “People First Employment: Dignified Employment Initiative”, they employ women coming out of incarceration or affected by generational poverty. In doing so, they offer flexible hours, work with their probation officers and help re-integrate these women back into society. Additionally, many of their employees have been identified through partnering with organizations dedicated to ending human trafficking and other forms of modern-day slavery.
